Description:
Blue Vervain is short-lived erect perennial herb, belonging to the Verbenaceae family. It has a square stem, pale-green leaves growing opposite one another, and spikes of small lilac flowers. The common name Vervain includes Verbena hastata (the American variety) which is used interchangeably with Verbena officinalis (the European variety).

Culinary Uses:
Blue Vervain is used in making liqueurs.
To make a tea, add 2 teaspoons dried Blue Vervain tops to 1 pint boiling water. Cover and steep for 15 minutes before straining.

Medicinal Uses:
A warm tea made with Blue Vervain is good for getting rid of congestion, fever and colds. Blue Vervain hwlps with insomnia, eliminating intestinal worms, and nervous conditions. A cold tea made with Blue Vervain is a tonic and when applied externally, will heal wounds and sores.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:
Blue Vervain should not be used during pregnancy. Blue Vervain can further increase blood pressure in persons afflicted with hypertension.
