Description:
Valerian is a robust perennial, belonging to the Valerianaceae family. It has a yellow-brown tuberous rootstock that rises to a hollow and furrowed stem with leaves growing in pairs that are sharply toothed, and lavender flowers that grow in dense , flat-topped cluster.

Culinary Uses:
To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon of Valerian Root, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.

Medicinal Uses:
Valerian is a relaxer, and is very effective for insomnia. It is often used as a tranquilizer, but it leaves no sluggish effects on the user. It is used for nervous tension, pain relieving, and for muscle spasms.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:
Valerian, when used in large doses can cause some people to feel depressed, nauseous, headachy and lethargic.
