Description:
Turmeric Powder is from the root of a tropical perennial herb, belonging to the Leguminosae family. It has a tuberous root and the leaves extend upward from thick erect stems arising from the root. The root is a fleshy oblong tuber. It is tapered at each end, and its exterior is yellowish-tan in color. The interior of the root is hard and deep orange. The root is dense and breaks into a powder that is lemon yellow in color. Turmeric root has a fragrant aroma and a somewhat bitter, peppery, biting taste reminiscent of ginger. When eaten, it colors the saliva yellow and leaves a warm sensation in the mouth.

Culinary Uses:
Turmeric is best known as the spice that gives curry powder its distinctive color. It is used Indian dishes, and in cooking throughout Asia. Turmeric is routinely added to mustard blends, relishes, lentil and meat dishes. It also is used in place of saffron to provide color and flavor.

Medicinal Uses:
Turmeric promotes good liver function and helps prevent gallbladder disease. It also may help prevent over-clotting of blood cells, and may help relieve arthritis symptoms.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:
Turmeric should not be used during pregnancy.
