Description:
Pennyroyal is a small annual, belonging to the Labiateae (Lamiaceae) family. It is a low-growing plantwith creeping roots that send up many stems covered with deep green, hairy, oval leaves. The flower clusters appear in typical mint like whorls and range in color from purple to pale lilac. Pennyroyal has a strong mintlike odor and pungent taste.

Culinary Uses:
The nickname Pudding Grass is due to the fact that this herb was once used to flavor puddings.
To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1/2 teaspoon of Pennyroyal herb, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.

Medicinal Uses:
Pennyroyal has been used traditionally as a stimulating tea to relieve digestive disorders, gall bladder disorders, gout, nausea, and nervous conditions. Prepared as a hot infusion, it will promote perspiration. Pennyroyal may relieve headache, bring down fever, and quiet coughs. It has also been used to treat bronchitis and sinusitis. As acarminative (gas-reliever), pennyroyal is considered an effective remedy for flatulence, a virtue it shares with other mints. It has also been used traditionally to treat suppressed menstruation.

Pennyroyal should not be used during pregnancy.
