Description:
Nutmeg is the seed from the Myristica Fragrans tree, belonging to the Myristicaceae family. It is a small and bushy tropical evergreen with smooth, greyish-brown bark, scented dark-green leaves, and scented tiny yellow flowers. The smooth and yellow fruit of this tree provides us with two separate spices, Mace and Nutmeg. Mace is the bright red covering (the aril) and Nutmeg (the nucleus) is the seed. Nutmeg's taste and smell is a bit more robust than that of Mace.

Culinary Uses:
Grind your Whole Nutmeg with a nutmeg grater or grinder for a freshly ground Nutmeg powder. Nutmeg is used in variety of cuisines, and in both sweet and savory dishes. Nutmeg can be used to flavor baked goods, apple dishes, pumpkin dishes, spinach dishes, cheese dishes, cream soups, sausages, meats, ice cream, hot chocolate, custards and puddings, white sauces, eggnog, fruits, preserves, and vegetables, particularly potatoes and squash. A dash of Nutmeg makes alcoholic beverages even more intoxicating, and is claimed to be an aphrodisiac.

Medicinal Uses:
Nutmeg relaxes the muscles, sedates the body, and helps remove gas from the digestive track. It is also used for chronic nervous disorders, kidney disorders, and to prevent nausea and vomiting. It is also helpful for ddiarrhea, rheumatism and stomachaches.

Nutmeg in large amounts may cause dizziness, stomach pains, rapid pulse, nausea, anxiety, liver pain, double vision and coma.
