Description:
Milk Thistle is a tall annual or biennial plant, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It has an erect stem with prickly leaves with white milky veins and yellow thorns at the margin. It has a solitary violet-purple thistle-like flower. The fruits (often referred to as seeds, technically named achenes) are brown, spotted and glossy, with a white tuft of hair. Milk Thistle contains ihe essential oils Tyramine, Histamine, Silymarine, and Silybin.

Culinary Uses:
Milk Thistle Seeds can be ground and sprinkled on cereals or salads. Milk Thistle Seeds can also be used to make Gomashio, by toasting them and grinding them with some sea salt.
To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon of Milk Thistle Seed, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.

Medicinal Uses:
Milk Thistle helps with liver disorders, it protects the liver from chemical and biological toxins, and boosts the liver's own regenerating powers. It also aids mild digestive problems and is sometimes given to prevent travel sickness.
