Description:
Licorice is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Leguminosae (Fabaceae) family. It has a long sturdy primary taproot that subdivides into several subsidiary roots, the foliage leaves are alternate, and from the axils of the leaves are spikes of bell shaped bluish to pale violet flowers, followed by small pods.

Culinary Uses:
To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 teaspoon of crushed Licorice Root, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.

Medicinal Uses:
Licorice is effective in the treatment of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis, for which it is been widely used in Japan. Whole Licorice is used as an expectorant for respiratory problems such as coughs and asthma. When recovering from an illness, it supplies needed energy to the system. Licorice Root nutritionally supports gastrointestinal systems, heart and spleen. It is effective in the healing of inflamed tissues and membranes. It also stimulates the adrenal glands and helps the body cope with stress. Licorice Root is a great source of the female hormone estrogen and helps to normalize and regulate hormone production.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:
Licorice is not for prolonged use except under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner. Prolonged use may cause hypertension, edema, headache, vertigo and potassium depletion. Not for use by persons with hypertension, hypokalemia, edema, cirrhosis of the liver and cholestaatic liver disorders, and diabetes. Not to be used during pregnancy.
