It has a long vine with large leaves, and fragrant yellow-white flowers. The fruit is a pear shaped and deep orange. It has a three-sectioned capsule, which bursts open when ripe and releases a dark brown-black seed. The seeds are peeled, dried, roasted and pulverized. The principal constituent in Guarana, called guaranine, is said to be identical to caffeine.

Culinary Uses: Guarana is used in sodas as an energizer and aid to weight loss. It is prepared by pulverizing and roasting the seeds, mixing with water, forming into bars, and then drying. It is occassionally mixed with chocolate.
Medicinal Uses: Guarana is a stimulant due to its high caffeine content. It has 2.5 times more caffeine than from coffee. It quickens your perceptions and wakefulness, slows the pulse, impairs the appetite, and relieve mental and physical fatigue. Though Guarana contains caffeine, it is more slowly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and thus has a longer lasting effect than coffee. Guarana also helps to curb diarrhea and reduces migraine headaches.
Precautions and Adverse Reactions: Guarana is not recommended for excessive or long-term use. Do not use this if you are pregnant.
