Arrowroot Powder (MARANTA ARUNDINACEA)

Description:
The Arrowroot plant is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Marantaceae family. It is a plant with with a creeping rhizome with upward-curving, whitish, scaly, cylindrical tubers. The leaves are light green, with long sheaths and leaf blades. Arrowroot powder is a starch that is made by washing the harvested roots, grinding them into a pulp, and mixing the pulp with water. The resulting mixture is strained to remove the fibrous material, allowed to settle, and be air dried and then ground into a fine powder.

Culinary Uses:
Arrowroot is used as a thickening agent for puddings and sauces such as gravy, it is absolutely tasteless and becomes clear when cooked, it should always be mixed with a cold liquid before cooking.
For general use, 1 tablespoon of Arrowroot powder will thicken 1 cup of liquid.

Medicinal Uses:
Arrowroot is used as a mild laxative but also helps relieve diarrhea caused by stress. Arrowroot is an excellent source of carbohydrates and digestible calcium. It also soothes irritated mucus membranes. Topically Arrowroot helps to relieve heat rash and sunburn.
