Description:
Agnus Castus (Chaste Tree) berries are the fruit of the Vitex Agnus-Castus tree from the Verbenaceae family. They are harvested by gently rubbing them loose from the shrubs stem. The dried berries have a pepper-like aroma and flavor. Vitex is commonly called Monk's Pepper because it was originally used as anti-libido medicine by monks to aid their attempts to remain celibate.

Culinary Uses:
The seeds are ground into a peppery-like condiment that can be used as a pepper substitute.
To make a tea, steep 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of crushed Agnus Castus Berries in 1 cup of boiling water.

Medicinal Uses:
Vitex has been said to be effective in stopping the heavy bleeding of perimenopause and reduce the hot flashes in menopause itself. The berries are considered to act as a balancer, not only in female hormonal problems, but also with regard to libido. Vitex is also used to treat fibroid cysts, especiallycysts in smooth muscle. Vitex is most effective when taken over a period of time.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:
Vitex agnus-castus should be avoided during pregnancy. It affects hormone production and should not be used by women taking birth control pills or estrogen. It is advised that patients with breast cancer, uterine cancer, or pituitary tumors not to take this herb. Rare side effects of using vitex are minor gastrointestinal upset and a mild skin rash with itching.
